What are communication difficulties?
Communication difficulties refer to any breakdown in communication, whether it’s a failure to hear or understand, or a misunderstanding that leads to an argument. Communication difficulties are sometimes caused by hearing loss (deafness), but they can also result from physical problems such as strokes, Parkinson’s disease, and head injuries.
People who use sign language may also experience communication difficulties when they encounter someone who doesn’t understand their language. Communication difficulties could happen when you’re at work or with your friends and family.
1. Share Your Thoughts
One easy way to overcome communication difficulties is to share your thoughts with those around you. After all, not everyone has read Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People! We don’t have a PhD in psychology or communications, so chances are we have different ways of processing information, and sometimes it takes time to figure out how our teammates prefer to receive that information.
By sharing your feelings with others, you give them an opportunity to chime in and offer suggestions. You may find the other person shares some tips on how they communicate too. For example, if someone tells me I seem stressed after I’ve had a rough day at work, I’ll usually tell them about my day in more detail to get their perspective on what could be making me feel that way.
It also helps me remember that there’s always someone else who cares about what I’m going through as well and provides support for me during tough times. Another tip for overcoming communication difficulties is to do your best to remain positive when speaking with people. When communicating, try using the I statements instead of you statements. For example, instead of saying You make me angry, say I am feeling angry. Turn the questions into statements like this: It makes sense that you’re feeling upset because… Another great tip for overcoming difficult conversations is to let go of judgment.
2. Be Genuine and Positive
Even though it can be hard sometimes, try and be genuine and positive when interacting with someone. You might just find that you’re helping them overcome their communication difficulties in a way that doesn’t leave them feeling frustrated or offended.
After all, everyone wants to feel understood and respected, so try putting yourself in their shoes when speaking with someone who has communication difficulties. A smile is also an excellent way to put others at ease, even if they are shy or reluctant to talk.
If you’re talking to someone who is displaying emotional cues like fidgeting or not making eye contact, mirror those behaviors in order to make them more comfortable and willing to communicate with you.
We tend to think people will understand us better if we use more words but this isn’t always the case for people with communication difficulties. 3. Be Proactive and Kind
One of the most effective methods for avoiding communication difficulties is to be proactive about setting up open lines of communication with colleagues and coworkers. If you’re having trouble with a coworker, it’s often helpful to just go ahead and initiate a conversation.
Don’t let things sit and fester. Open yourself up first so that your co-worker can follow suit. It also helps to keep your tone positive, there is little benefit in being rude, even if someone else has been rude to you first.
If a colleague or employee is having communication difficulty with their manager, try talking directly to their manager about what you’ve noticed. You could offer solutions or point out the benefits of making small changes that would make all parties happier and this is also a way to care for those that are having communication difficulties.
For example, if an employee is frustrated by their supervisor not responding to emails quickly enough, ask them how they would feel if they were managing 10 employees. And as always, be kind. The easiest way to overcome communication difficulties is by taking an empathetic approach and remembering that we are all human beings who want the same thing respect and appreciation.
The hard part of managing people is that everyone communicates differently. Some people like a lot of feedback, some people prefer face-to-face meetings, and some people work best on their own time frame without constantly checking in.

You can also use these platforms to ask questions and get feedback from others who might be able to provide some much-needed insight into your own problems. Another bonus is that you’ll feel less alone in a vast digital landscape, as there are thousands of people on these platforms trying to solve their own communication difficulties too. Communication difficulties don’t need to slow you down or hold you back; they just need a little creative problem-solving!
5. Don’t Let Criticism Get You Down
No matter how hard you try, there will always be people who are critical of your work. While it can sometimes be discouraging, criticism is actually a valuable tool that can help you improve your work. Use these tips to learn how to stop communication difficulties and get back on track.

Be patient with yourself, Communication difficulties happen because we’re trying to communicate and understand each other’s point of view at the same time no one said it would be easy! Give yourself time to process what has been said before responding.
6. Check the Facts First
Before you discuss difficult topics with your partner, make sure you have some facts straight. You’ll communicate more clearly if you avoid assumptions and say exactly what you mean instead of making off-the-cuff statements that could be misconstrued.
If there are communication difficulties in your relationship, clear things up as early as possible so a misunderstanding doesn’t get blown out of proportion. Ask for clarification before reacting, and use I statements to make it clear how a topic makes you feel.
Avoid arguments about whose fault the communication difficulty is, instead focus on how you can work together to resolve the issue. It can also help to create communication boundaries so the conversation stays focused on the problem at hand rather than other issues.
If these efforts don’t work, consider seeing a couples counselor or therapist for support through this process. A professional can help both parties understand the communication difficulties, empathize with each other’s perspectives, and identify ways to move forward. In addition, having a neutral third party might make communication less strained between partners.
